The Blinded Vet
The Blinded Vet, is a webpage designed by Terry Dodge, a veteran Marine and a 2019 graduate from the Blind Rehabilitation Center at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, in Chicago Illinois. The purpose of this page is to assist, inform and encourage, fellow blinded veterans in dealing with their vision loss, while at the same time, learning to use the visual assisting devices received at or from a VA Blind Rehabilitation Center. Terry encourages any veteran who is dealing with vision loss to contact their VA representative and ask about the VA Blind Rehabilitation Program. It is a life changing experience spent along side fellow blinded vets, experiencing and learning together, how to navigate their way through the blind life.
What Are Blind Rehabilitation Centers?
The Blind Rehabilitation Centers (BRC's) are residential inpatient programs that provide comprehensive adjustment to blindness training and serve as a resource to a geographic area usually comprised of several states. Blind Rehabilitation Centers offer a variety of skill courses designed to help blinded Veterans achieve a realistic level of independence.
These skill areas include:

Orientation and mobility,

Communication skills,

Activities of daily living,

Manual skills and Visual skills,

Computer access training,

Social/recreational activities,
The Veteran is also assisted in making, emotional and behavioral adjustments to blindness, through individual counseling sessions, and group therapy meetings.
